Is AI-Generated Content on its Way Out in 2024?

Artificial intelligence (AI) was originally the stuff of science fiction movies set in the future. It represented an idea many people did not think would happen in their lifetime. However, AI is becoming a fundamental part of daily life, as evidenced by voice assistants, digital banking, facial ID on smartphones, and, more lately, some utilize it to generate content.

What is AI-Generated Content?

AGC (artificial intelligence-generated content) is content generated by an AI system. AGC can be used to create material such as text, audio, photos, and videos. AGC is becoming increasingly popular as a tool to create material fast and efficiently, saving up time and resources for other activities.

In November 2022, OpenAI launched Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT), a similar AI algorithm for content. This bot is more general-purpose, with an open prompt for users to ask questions, give a command or ask for an observation and the bot responds to both general and specific questions.

As a result, organizations are looking into artificial AI solutions to assist with content production and copywriting, raising the question of whether AI may eventually replace content writers.

Hence, it is rather surprising to learn in less than a year that ChatGPT maker OpenAI, which made headlines across the world for its highly impressive AI-based chatbot, is predicted to go bankrupt before 2024 ends. Based on a new report that looks at OpenAI’s earnings, it is being reported that ChatGPT is draining OpenAI’s banks faster than the chatbot’s pace of generating revenue.[1]

Comparing figures from June to July 2023, a reduction of 12 per cent in the user base was recorded, signifying a drop from 1.7 billion users to 1.5 billion users, as corroborated by SimilarWeb’s data.[2]

Although AI-generated content may not be suitable for all copywriting, there are some great ways to use these tools. Here are a few advantages.

Pros of AI-generated content

Efficiency and scalability

The ability of AI to create content far faster than humans is perhaps the most significant advantage. An article can be created in minutes by an AI tool whereas a human writer would need far more time to conduct all of the research and compose it.

Cost-effective

Hiring skilled content writers often costs a few hundred dollars each project, depending on the length of the article, the number of pieces required, and the level of technical knowledge required. Some AI writing tools are free, while others need a monthly subscription cost. ChatGPT is available for $20 per month.

Improves Search engine optimization (SEO)

AI content generators scroll through thousands of online documents to gather information. By viewing all these documents, the AI tool can suggest keywords to the content writer. When these keyword suggestions are used throughout an article, the content appears higher in search engine rankings if it follows the rest of the guidelines for being authoritative and is written by a person.

On the other hand, some content is best written by a human writer. Here are some disadvantages of AI-generated content.

Cons of AI-generated content

Quality concerns and possible plagiarism

AI tools piece content together from various sites and reword it. However, the intended tone may get lost, and the flow may not be properly structured. Content needs to be authoritative and informative, which can be hard to do when piecing information together from various sites without proper human review.

Human editing still required

Although employing AI to generate material may save time, individuals must still read and fact-check AI-generated content. This is due to the fact that AI tools combine information from multiple websites into one piece of article, and there may be some phrases to correct or badly organized sentences used.

Cannot generate new ideas

As AI technologies use existing data for content, they are unable to generate new ideas or original content, making it difficult to create new content that integrates the latest, trending ideas and topics.
