COVID-19 vaccine registrations will kick-off in March 2021 said Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Khairy Jamaluddin. Being the coordinating minister in charge of the national vaccination program, Khairy laid out the 5 ways you can register your consent to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

The process includes Malaysians expressing their consent on the MySejahtera app as a pre-requisite to receiving the vaccine shots. Besides the MySejahtera app, there are several other registration options for Malaysian to choose from to register the consent for the COVID-19 vaccine. 

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is said to launch a website, by Special Vaccine Supply Access Guarantee Committee (JKJAV), next week, which will allow Malaysians to sign up online. For communities with least to zero internet access, a hotline number will also be provided for people to call in and register.

Public and private healthcare sectors will also be allowing the rakyat a manual registrations option.  The government will also be working closely with respective state authority to reach out to senior citizens in rural areas.

The vaccine will be given out in three phases with 500,000 being given out in April 2021 to frontliners, who are especially in healthcare, police, RELA, BOMBA and civil defense sector. It is also said that the Prime Minister will be the first recipient of the vaccine in spirits of boosting Malaysia’s confidence in the vaccine.

April – August 2021 will observe the second phase which covers 9.4 million people including senior citizens above 60 years old, people with non-communicable diseases and people with disabilities. Phase 3, the final phase, which is set to be from May 2021 up till February 2022, is accommodated to adults aged 18 years and above.

The government is looking to vaccinate over 80% of the population or 26.5 million people, including undocumented migrants to achieve herd immunity. Considering the fact that foreign workers significantly contribute to the Malaysian economy while taking into account cases where Malaysians will also be vaccinated in other countries, the government believes that its best to move in said direction.

According to PR Newswire, back in September 2020, K11 shopping malls in Mainland China observed a quarter-on-quarter growth of 85% while K11 MUSEA in Hong Kong experienceda 35% bounce back from just the first quarter. This phenomenon of an overwhelming influx of impulsive purchases that is helping the nation’s economy post-Covid-19 is globally known as ‘revenge shopping’ or ‘revenge spending’. Is this the case back home in Malaysia?

As Malaysians slowly make their way through the daily routines of the new normal, ‘revenge shopping’ has only been surfacing as of late. According to the Malaysian Retail Chain Association (MRCA), “the lockdown has ‘forced’ many Malaysians to adapt to online shopping”. However, despite the endless access to countless online stores throughout the lockdown, many shopaholics, especially Millennials, look forward to spending quality, face-to-face time with family and friends at shopping malls because of the laid-back yet vibrant ambience that malls provide.

While multiple SME, retail and mall associations have been relentlessly urging the Malaysian government for more aid to be implemented into the 2021 Budget’s framework, luxury brands, fast fashion and the F&B line have been doing their part by handing out vouchers of reasonable deals and discounts in hopes that it will encourage consumers to continue investing in their products and services. 

The MRCA also added that, “the retail industry will not be out of the woods anytime soon. 2021 will still present a challenging year for many retailers due to VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity) elements arising from the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. While many are still adapting to the new normal of doing business, it is reasonable to expect that more businesses will continue to consolidate and downsize their operations. Many retailers are hoping that the government will revise the Covid-19 Act to protect their businesses during this transition period”.

With the current economic and social climate, most retailers are expected to have a plan B which will be activated for an eventuality where there may be an unpredictable call for yet another round of MCO. This may involve digitalising their ventures or even hibernating their business until the overall situation promises a much clearer foreseeability.

It is evident that the retail industry in Malaysia will take its time to pick up the pace of growth that is prior to the sudden viral outbreak. As Malaysians gradually get accustomed tothe new normal while practicing proper hygiene and effective social distancing, it is safe to say that the retail industry may predict an increase in revenues by the second half of 2021 asthe industry may take some time in the first half to warm up and adapt the new approach of consumer behaviours and trends.

Kim remarked, “We [at LG] acknowledge that clean air and water are ubiquitous necessities everyone should be able to enjoy. With LG PuriCareTM, we are enabling consumers to breathe in the purest form of air and drink the most hygienic and cleanest water possible.”

Since PuriCareTM launched in South Korea back in 2009, product sales have grown over 40% year-on-year with one unit sold every 30 minutes. Since its launch in 2009, LG recorded accumulated sales of 1.3 million units of water purifiers.

“In Malaysia, we have seen triple-digit sales growth since our launch in July. This has become our benchmark to work harder to become bigger and better next year.” Extolling the unique selling points of its tankless water purifier, Kim said it is the first-of-its kind to provide clean drinking water without a water tank by using direct water filtration, eliminating the concerns of microorganism formation.

This energy-saving water purifier also minimises standby power and through the LG instantaneous cooling and heating technology, users can avail themselves to instant cold and hot water with just a simple one-touch.

Backing up the technological advances of its tankless water purifier is LG Total Service Care 1.2.3, provided by qualified service professionals who make regular house visits for product sanitation every 3 months and change filter periodically.

Elaborating on how it works, Kim said internal pipes are replaced annually to ensure the product’s hygiene under LG’s one-year replacement care while its two-layer ultra-violet (UV) sterilising care allows users to automatically activate the UV sterilisation on an hourly basis or they can manually sterilised it for five minutes.

Thanks to their well-monitored hygiene and top-notch sanitation procedures, LG Malaysia has successfully obtained a halal certification from Malaysia’s Islamic Development Department (JAKIM), further assuring not only the Muslim community but all Malaysians that the PuriCareTM tankless water purifier is clean and hygienic.

Reviewing his career path, Kim said, “I have faced many obstacles and challenges. With each challenge and obstacle, I have grown to become a better employee and individual. I am grateful my past obstacles have shaped me the way I am today.”

In order to succeed in life, he believes that persistence is vital and one should never give up during difficult times. As for new start-ups, his advice is, “Keep working hard and stay humble” and reminded them to not give up when the going gets tough.

International Bank HSBC said 71 percent of experienced overseas professionals found Malaysia to be better than their home country.

According to their 12 annual league table, the bank found improved quality of life and more disposable income, combined with a great base for exploring and traveling and excellent quality of food, have been among the reasons for expats to move to Malaysia.

“As the world’s leading international bank, we know that experienced professionals who cross international borders are a vital force in the global economy and they challenge the status quo, helping to build bridges between markets, societies and businesses in the process,” said Tara Latini, Head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management, HSBC Malaysia.

Also, 61 percent of those who have moved to Malaysia find they have more disposable income as the cost of living is lower and 13 percent have seen salaries double since moving.

The survey showed that a majority who have moved to Malaysia are happy with the country’s political (64 percent) and economic (58 percent) stability.

The HSBC survey also said  36 percent of experienced overseas professionals are keen on settling their family here for the long haul, choosing to stay longer than initially planned.

This survey was opened to adults over 18 years old currently living away from their home country.

Entrepreneurship is not for everyone. Well, not everyone who aspires to be an entrepreneur achieve success. You are required to have certain personal traits to become a successful entrepreneur and among them is to be mentally strong.

An individual lacking or without mental toughness can have all the natural talents or ability and not make it as far as someone with mental toughness with average ability.

Mental strength is of three parts, namely your thoughts, emotions, and behaviour. You must regulate your thoughts, manage your emotions and behave productively to become mentally strong.

To give budding entrepreneurs a clearer idea on how to build mental strength, below are 11 methods they should practise in their daily life.

1. HAVE YOUR OWN DEFINITION OF SUCCESS

People who has high mental strength don’t engage in negative or unhealthy competition. Knowing that everyone’s path is unique, they set goals according to their own definition of success and work hard to achieve them. They focus on their own progression rather than comparing themselves to others.

2. REPLACE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS WITH PRODUCTIVE THOUGHTS

You can build mental resilience by increasing your awareness of your thinking. Exaggerated, negative thoughts, such as “I can’t ever do anything right” will hold you back from reaching your full potential.

Contain your negative thoughts and clear them out of your head before they spiral out of control and influence your behaviour. Find excessively negative thoughts and replace them with thoughts that are more productive. A more balanced and productive thought may be, “I have some weaknesses, but I also have plenty of strengths”.

3. LEARN WHEN TO SAY “NO”

According to a research, the more difficulty you have of saying no, the more likely you are to experience mental fatigue, stress and even depression.

Mentally strong entrepreneurs know when to say “no” and it is important so that their schedule will not be messed up. Instead of accepting every social invite or helping business associates with every project, they just say “no” when necessary. By doing so, they will not overcommit themselves and can complete their own work on time.

4. BE THANKFUL

Instead of focusing on the challenges and problems they face, mentally strong people appreciate all the wonderful things they do have. Think of three things you feel thankful for each day. Or, start a gratitude journal to jot down all the good and positive things you experienced throughout the day.

5. ESTABLISH GOALS

It is important for an individual who aspire to be successful to establish goals. It helps that the human brain is naturally inclined to reach for and achieve goals.

However, don’t just set one big goal, such as I want to lose 3kgs in a month. Furthermore, set short-term goals which are more manageable, for example, “replying all my emails by 11.00am today” or “focussing on work for 30 minutes without checking my phone”.

With each goal you achieve, you’ll gain more confidence in your ability to succeed. You can also evaluate if your goals are unrealistically ambitious or they’re not challenging enough.

6. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS DAILY

Today’s busy world doesn’t lend itself to making much time available for quiet reflection. Create time to reflect upon your progress toward developing mental strength. At the end of each day, ask yourself what you’ve learned about your thoughts, emotions and behaviour. Consider what you hope to improve upon or accomplish tomorrow.

7. USE YOUR MENTAL ENERGY PRUDENTLY

Mentally strong people use their resources prudently, because they know that time and energy are finite. They don’t waste time worrying about things out of their control or rehashing things they can’t change. They use every ounce of brainpower to improve themselves.

8. ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR OWN LIMITATIONS

Mentally strong people aren’t afraid to admit their weaknesses. They acknowledge when they need help and they aren’t afraid to delegate tasks.

9. DON’T BLAME OTHERS

You should never, ever, blame others for your mistakes or failings. A mentally strong person will always take full responsibility for their actions. By doing so, you will keep pushing for self-improvement and avoid being stuck with no progress.

10. ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR ACTION

No matter it is for work, a performance or competition, mentally tough people are always well prepared for action. Being prepared helps to achieve better results. You might have played two other performances the same day or you might be feeling slightly unwell.

The pride you get from performing your best in less optimal circumstances makes it that much easier to succeed in all circumstances. The third performance of the day might not be your best, but it should be the best you can possibly give. The next time when conditions are better you will play better for times you pushed yourself to give it all.

11. STAY CALM UNDER PRESSURE

A goal worth going for is going to put you under high pressure one time or another. People with high mental strength are capable of giving their best under pressure.

You can’t just “switch on” your calmness under tensed situations. The key here is to seek out pressure situations working up from low pressure to medium pressure to high pressure situations. An example would be to perform in front of larger and larger groups; or find better and better opponents. With the accumulated experience, withstanding high pressure will eventually become the new normal for you.
